At Edible Earth Scapes, we’re passionate about transforming landscapes into thriving, sustainable ecosystems. A little while ago, we had the unique opportunity to rescue several peach trees from a dumpster—an unexpected start to a fruitful project in Ocala, Florida. Here’s how we turned this rescue mission into a flourishing peach tree guild that’s both productive and low-maintenance.

The Peach Tree Rescue

When a customer approached us to incorporate fruit trees into their landscape alongside their beloved crape myrtles, we saw a chance to create something special. We chose peach trees for this Ocala property because they thrive in Florida’s climate, provided they get the chill hours they need to produce fruit. To our delight, within the first year of planting, these rescued peach trees bore fruit, proving their resilience and potential.

From Lawn to Guild: A Sustainable Solution

Initially, the customer was mowing between the trees, but they soon grew tired of the maintenance. They asked us to design a garden bed to replace the grass, creating a low-maintenance, eco-friendly solution. We opted for pine bark mulch, a natural choice that complements the surrounding pine trees and supports the peach trees’ health by maintaining soil moisture and suppressing weeds. This mulch also adds organic matter to the soil as it breaks down, fostering a healthier ecosystem. We wrote a blog article recommending peaches as

Building the Peach Tree Guild

To take this project to the next level, we’re collaborating with WeedWiseGardens.com to create a peach tree guild—a polyculture system that mimics nature’s diversity. By intercropping native plants, we’re enhancing the garden bed with multiple benefits:

  • Pollinator Support: Native flowering plants attract bees and other pollinators, boosting peach production and supporting local biodiversity.
  • Weed Control: Dense plantings of low-growing natives naturally suppress weeds, reducing the need for manual weeding or herbicides.
  • Nitrogen Fixers: We’re incorporating nitrogen-fixing plants, like clover or vetch, to enrich the soil and provide natural fertilizer for the peach trees.

This guild approach not only makes the garden bed more resilient but also reduces maintenance while creating a vibrant, productive landscape.

Looking Ahead

The Ocala peach tree guild is a testament to what’s possible when we work with nature. From dumpster-rescued trees to a thriving, sustainable garden bed, this project showcases how thoughtful design and collaboration can yield delicious results. We’re excited to continue partnering with WeedWiseGardens.com to maintain and expand this guild, ensuring it remains a fruitful haven for both the customer and local wildlife.

Stay tuned for updates on this project and more from Edible Earth Scapes as we continue to grow edible, sustainable landscapes across Ocala!
